On an EA blog post the publisher and the game's developers informed fans that the game would indeed be delayed and that they're focusing on current-gen systems rather than a next-gen experience. The post states that the team "made the decision to focus on adding innovation and new features rather than the resource-heavy task of porting the game to new console technology." Thankfully thanks to forward compatibility that's coming standard on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 early adopters of the new consoles will still have the option to play the game without fret but the game won't be purpose-built for next-gen hardware.

NHL 20 was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 13 2019. It appears as though NHL 21 will be closed to if not a month or more later. Many are also wondering if NHL 21 will be playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and if there will be a separate version. That will not be the case however the current-generation version will be playable on next-gen systems through forward compatibility.
